The CARD Light to Life Project, based in Nadavayal, Wayanad, serves as a comprehensive developmental initiative for tribal communities in the region. Wayanad, historically ruled by the Veda tribe Rajas, Pazhassi Raja, and later the British, spans 700–2100 meters above sea level and is home to tribal groups including Paniyas, Adiyas, Kattunayakans, Kurichyars, Kurumas, Ooralis, and Uraalis. With a tribal population of 151,443 out of 817,429, livelihoods in the area are primarily agricultural, focusing on crops such as ginger, coffee, pepper, rice, coconut, rubber, yam, and tapioca, while younger generations increasingly pursue alternative professions. The district’s monsoon-dependent fertile soil faces challenges due to climate change, affecting crop yields and economic stability.
Since its inception in April 2018, the project office at Kattadikavala in Poothadi Panchayath has been actively engaged with 12 tribal villages across four Panchayats – Panamaram, Poothadi, Pulpally, and Kaniyambetta—supporting 100 sponsored children through 7 tuition centers serving 135 students. Major initiatives in 2024–25 included educational development programs such as computer literacy, reading campaigns, motivational counseling, and celebrations of key social and national days. Physical development was supported through nutritious food distribution, health screenings, and special care for children with medical needs. Value-based and socio-emotional learning activities encompassed mental health awareness, personality development, and child rights programs, while family empowerment initiatives included SHG income generation and training programs. The project continues to act as a beacon of hope for marginalized tribal communities, achieving meaningful outcomes and fostering opportunities for holistic development.
